Title of Clinical Placement |
Surgery as part of Year 3 LIC |
Placement Overview |
In Year 3 students should have plenty of opportunity to visit surgical wards to develop history taking and bedside clinical skills. During attachments they should be able to attend theatre and endoscopy sessions. Students should see patients on the ward and in clinics, as well as follow elective surgical patients through their peri-operative inpatient journey. Opportunities should be available in Year 3 to attend emergency surgical wards to see the acutely ill surgical patients and help with their management. Students should be encouraged to follow acute surgical patients from the Emergency Department through their inpatient journey. |

Learning Resources |
During the Year 3 the major topics and key principles underlying current surgical practice will be covered. Students are encouraged to watch the relevant online lecture (by a senior clinician/ surgeon) on Thursday afternoons. The recordings along with the uploaded slides are available on the Year 3 section of the portal. |
Students should make sure to read around topics . Our recommended textbook is “Principles and Practice of Surgery”. The latest edition of this book is available as hard copy but can be viewed electronically via the QUB library. |
|
Students should remember to look at the other content on the portal. For instance, the videos and additional material on various examinations and scrubbing are available. Students should make sure to watch the male catheterisation video before the practical session during the introductory week in August. |
|
Surgical Podcasts are also a good way to learn and can fit in around the student's daily routine (e.g., listening when commuting to placement). Some recommended Podcasts include School of Surgery and Behind The Knife. |
