Title of Clinical Placement Haematology. Year 3 LIC Belfast Trust, Year 3 LIC DGH,
Placement Overview The overall aim in teaching haematology is to allow every doctor to be able to use the haematology service both from a clinical and laboratory point of view for good patient management (not to make you into haematology specialists). As a doctor you will be using haematology services in most areas in order to diagnose and manage patients.
In third year students will have multiple opportunities to gain experience in haematology during the LIC. There are many slots which you can book into to attend haematology clinics, the haematology ward and the haematology day unit. This will give you the opportunities to see and hear from patients and observe some of the procedures.
Throughout the year 6 sessions (on 3 afternoons) will be delivered on Zoom by expert haematologists. These will be on anaemia, leukaemia, myeloma, coagulation lymphoma and diagnostic investigation in haematology. Background notes on these areas are on the portal and the talks will be uploaded after delivery. Thus throughout the year you should gain a good background knowledge of general haematology, both malignant and non-malignant, coagulation and blood transfusion. You should gain an appreciation of haematology and be able to diagnose and treat clinical aspects of patient management with the use of laboratory investigations for the rest of your career.
